Beautiful Battle members visited the Veolia Enclosed Compost Centre at Whitesmith in East Sussex on 21st September 2012.   The centre is designed to process green garden waste with a capability of processing up to 46000 tonnes per year of biodegradable waste received from kerbside collection schemes and from the 14 Waste Recycling Sites throughout East Sussex, Brighton and Hove.

TIPPING HALL
The biodegreable waste materials are delivered to an enclosed delivery hall where any obvious material is removered.  The materials are then shredded, mixed and loaded into a series of enclosed tunnels.

TUNNELS
Tunnels act as highly efficient biological reactor where temperature, moisture and oxygen levels are monitored continuosly tp ensure optimumconditions for accelerated degradation are met to guarantee full batch traceability and quality control.

MATURATION HALL
The compost is then removed to for a final period of maturation, after which it is graded and marketed. The whole process takes about 8 - 12 weeks.
